Spatial Design Strategy: for a walkable Braam

The students worked in groups of 5 (or 4) to develop a Spatial Design Strategy for the future development of inclusive public space in Juta Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Brief 1.3 Spatial Design Strategy

This Spatial Design Strategy was grounded in the students Provisional manifesto for inclusive public spaces in Johannesburg, and it was developed from the precedent studies developed by the Studio. It was based on the Walkable Braamfontein concept by Local Studio and on the socio-spatial mapping by 1to1 Agency of Engagement.

The general brief for this project was to engage propositionally with the Braamfontein Urban Design Framework by Local Studio (i.e. Walkable Braamfontein). Whilst working with Local Studio as their main Agent of Change, theiSpatial Design Strategy will serve as a ‘critique by design’ of this framework in-the-pipeline.

The students have collectively developed a number of spatial propositions that either endorse their framework, expanding on particular aspects of it, or question it by advancing further proposals.

This Final Spatial Design Strategy includes a range of tangible/physical and intangible/social elements.
